7 Things You Must Think About Before Making a Big Decision

Life is full of decisions.  It would be a lot easier if we were given an instructions manual at birth. It may be a little boring but it would be easy. Imagine if we knew exactly what to do for every big decision in life:

Choosing a major in college.

Deciding on a career.

Where to live.

Who to marry.

Children or not.

Unfortunately, there’s no blueprint for life – it’s a journey with God. Although, God doesn’t give us specific answers to all of life’s major decisions in advance, He does provide us with direction, wisdom and makes Himself available for the answers we need along the way.

Here are 7 things that will help you make great life decisions with God:

1.The Right Information

“For which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it—” -Luke 14:28

Before making any major decision in life it’s important to sit down, gather all of the pertinent information and determine whether or not the decision will work for you. This is what Jesus explained to the crowd who were drawn by His miracles, healings, and free food. People thought jesus was cool, He was the talk of the town, and the latest fad but were they ready to be His disciples? Jesus laid out the terms of discipleship, so they could make a thoughtful decision to follow him. The same goes for you and I when we make big and little life decisions.

2.Rightly Aligned Heart

your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.” -Matthew 6:10

When it comes to making decisions in life, is it important that our hearts are aligned with the will of God. When our heart are aligned with His will, making decisions are easier. We will naturally be drawn to the things that God desires. Before making a decision it’s a good idea to examine your heart and motives?

Before making a big decision, I recommend spending time with God in prayer. What is God saying about the decision you’re contemplating? Has He given you peace to move forward or is there a unsettled feeling in your heart? Prayer is powerful. It’s often in our prayer closets that we hear from God. If you need to strengthen your prayer life, please do so, so you can make better decisions with God. Also, here’s a post I wrote to help you hear God’s voice better.

4.Life Purpose.

Potential life altering decisions should unquestionably align with your unique life purpose. You wouldn’t want to make a decision that causes you neglect, disregard or jeopardize the calling of God on your life. This would of course require you to understand your life purpose. I wrote a blog post that shares several key ways God reveals our calling to us.

5.Season of Life.

“To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven” -Ecclesiastes 3:3

Another thing to consider when making a major life decision is the season of life that you are in. Is it the right time to move forward with your decision? Or is this something that you should wait for a another season to do? Imagine if snow fell in the summer or if flowers blossomed in the winter? It is possible to prematurely make a decision. Is it the right timing?

6.Godly Counsel.

“The godly offer good counsel” -Psalm 37:20

When making a big decision in life it’s not a bad idea to discuss with the godly counsel in our lives. Input from those who know us and love us and also love God is a great source of clarity and wisdom. Factor in the counsel of others can certainly help with making decisions.

Before finalizing your decision you want to be sure to look at God’s word. Does He have anything to say through scripture about the decision you are preparing to make? If your decision or advice of other contradicts God’s word, well… don’t do it. Step back and reconsider. You’ll be surprised, but the word of God has something to say about everything.

Aleida, this was a great list of things we should think about before we make any big decision (or even some of our small ones for that matter). How much time and pain we could save ourselves if we just consult God before we jump into anything. Wise words. Thanks for sharing. – Amy

  11. Such great biblically based suggestions! We do need to see if we have ourselves aligned with God and His word before we take further steps for sure!

Very good! Not only do we need to make sure it fits within God’s will and be in prayer about it but we also have to make sure it’s in His timing and we are not trying to jump the gun.

One thing I like to pray is that God will align my heart so that I want what He wants. It’s a scary prayer, but a good one!
